Prioritise Essential Repatriation of Ghanaians Abroad – Haruna Iddrisu

Published

on

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has urged government to ensure all stranded Ghanaians abroad are brought back home amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

Although borders still remain closed, government has through special arrangements brought some stranded citizens abroad back home.

However, Haruna Iddrisu insists a lot can be done to bring back all stranded Ghanaians.

“We need to do something about Ghanaians abroad who are still stranded. They are our citizens. I know that some efforts have been done, but we need to get our citizens back home. Many of them are not working in foreign countries and we know what that means. At least, if they are home, family members will share some bread with them. That is not the case in Europe or America,” he stated.

He added, “there is a huge number of Ghanaians out there, but what is being done to bring them into the country? The government must prioritise essential repatriation of Ghanaians as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Legally, Ghana Doesn’t Exist – Kosi Kedem

Published

on

Kosi Kedem, a former Member of Parliament for Hohoe South has argued that Ghana does not legally exist.

This comes in the wake of some group pf persons alleged to be secessionists in the Volta Region demanding a breakaway from the country.

“There’s no union document on the so-called union between Ghana (Gold Coast) and Togoland. De facto, they are one [unit], but legally, Ghana does not exist,” Kosi Kedem said on Joy News’ PM Express on Tuesday.

He explained that Ghana as a country is made up of the Gold Coast and the UN Trust Territory of British Togoland, adding that, for a union to be constitutionally legal, a union document needs to be legalized.

Kedem said, “Resolution 1044 which recognizes the recommended union, the same UN Resolution 1044 invited the British Government which was the administering authority to take such steps as necessary to bring about the union.”

He continued: “So, if a Trust Territory, being ruled by the UN and a colony being ruled by Britain are to come into union, what do you do? You have to sit the two of them down for them to determine what type of government they want to have, what will be their responsibilities, obligations and benefits. No such thing was done.”

Kosi Kedem revealed: “The problem is that there was a plebiscite as a result of the UN Visiting Mission which came to the two Togos; French Togo and British Togo in 1955, and they recommended that there should be a plebiscite in British Togoland to determine their political fate. Majority of Togoland said that they wanted a union with an independent Gold Coast…the UN General Assembly rejected the offer of the union and forcibly integrated Togoland with Gold Coast.”

“On the eve of independence, around 4th March, the British Government with the help of the CPP government just sent troops to Togoland and occupied the place on the pretence that they were quelling a rebellion,” he noted.

He called for a dialogue between the secessionist group and government instead of resorting to violence.

“Violence, confrontation, repression are very powerful, but dialogue negotiation and engagement are far more powerful than violence because violence does not solve any problem, dialogue does. It gives you a long-lasting solution to the problem,” the former MP added.

EC Boss Reveals How Some Names Got Omitted From The Voters’ Register

Published

on

Electoral Commission chair, Mrs Jean Mensah has explained how some names were omitted from the current voters register.

Addressing the press Monday, September 28, 2020, Mrs Jean Mensah said a process to export the information of registered voters onto secured storage is to blame for the missing names in the register.

“Registration of voters is done using Biometric Registration Devices at the Polling Stations. Thereafter, the data is then transmitted to the data centre where it undergoes the process of de-duplication by the Automatic Biometric Identification System (ABIS).

“In other words, the data is exported for secure storage and further analysis. The provisional register is then produced. In a few instances, the process of exportation of data from the USB sticks to the central server was faulty leading to shortfalls of data in some areas

“It is important to highlight that although the registration process is IT-driven, there is still a significant amount of human involvement that may result in errors in every step of the process from registration to exhibition. In short, due to unintentional human and administrative errors, the process of exportation of data from the BVD kits to the USB sticks and then to the Central Database was in a few instances faulty leading to shortfalls in some areas. In a nutshell, our technology performed optimally as expected, however, in some areas, the human element of ours fell short leading to some of the gaps in the data we experienced,” she explained
