Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political Scientist with the University of Ghana has opined on the Supreme Court’s decision to rule in favor of the Electoral Commission (EC) against the National Democratic Congress as a winner-takes it-all decision.
The main opposition party, NDC raised legal action against the Electoral Commission(EC) so they would allow the use of the current voters card as a prerequisite for the registration of the new voters card.
This was against the Electoral Commission’s decision to use the National ID Card and the Ghanaian passport for the registration exercise.
The Supreme Court however ruled that, the EC was an independent body which could decide on its own unless it was going against the law and as such could go ahead with its decision in then compilation of the new voters register.
However, the political scientist with the University of Ghana expressed his disappointment on social media thus, “I was expecting the Supreme Court Ruling to be conciliatory. But as far as I am concerned, it’s a Winner-Takes-All decision. The EC will compile a new register and u cannot use any old Voter ID Card as source document for registration, finito!”.
The NDC had earlier misinterpreted the verdict leading to celebration by the party until a further clarity was made by the court.
