Removing Jean Mensa Is Key To Our Reset Agenda – Asiedu Nketia

Asiedu Nketia’s remarks suggest that the NDC is pushing for a major overhaul of key state institutions as part of what he calls a “reset agenda.” The call for the EC’s leadership to be replaced raises questions about the incoming government’s plans for electoral reforms and the potential for political tension in the coming months.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his demand for the dismissal of top officials at the Electoral Commission (EC), declaring that the party’s victory in the 2024 general elections does not excuse what he describes as past misconduct by the electoral body.

Speaking in a recent interview on Radio Gold, Asiedu Nketia maintained his stance that key figures in the EC, including Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies, must be removed from office.

“Winning Doesn’t Absolve the EC” – Asiedu Nketia

The NDC chairman, who has long been a vocal critic of the EC’s leadership, stated that he was the first to advocate for the removal of high-ranking officials in state institutions, including the Auditor-General and the Electoral Commission.

“I initiated the conversation about removing top officials from various state institutions, including the Electoral Commission and the Auditor General,” he said.

He further argued that the NDC’s electoral success does not validate the EC’s past decisions, insisting that accountability must still be enforced.

“Just because the NDC won the 2024 elections does not suddenly make Mrs. Jean Mensa an angel. If it were up to me alone, she and the entire leadership of the Electoral Commission should be removed,” he declared.

Jean Mensa and the EC’s Leadership Under Scrutiny

Mrs. Jean Mensa, a lawyer and governance expert, has served as EC Chairperson since 2018. She is supported by two deputies:

  • Dr. Bossman Eric Asare (Deputy Commissioner in charge of Corporate Services), a former Head of the Political Science Department at the University of Ghana.
  • Mr. Samuel Tettey (Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations), a long-serving EC official with extensive experience in electoral management.

Despite presiding over what international observers deemed a generally peaceful and credible 2024 election, the EC continues to face criticism from the NDC, which has previously accused the Commission of bias and mismanagement.

NDC’s “Reset Agenda” and the Future of Electoral Governance

Asiedu Nketia’s remarks suggest that the NDC is pushing for a major overhaul of key state institutions as part of what he calls a “reset agenda.” The call for the EC’s leadership to be replaced raises questions about the incoming government’s plans for electoral reforms and the potential for political tension in the coming months.

The party’s insistence on the removal of the Electoral Commissioners could set the stage for a contentious debate over institutional independence versus political accountability in Ghana’s democracy.

What Next?

The demand for sweeping changes at the EC will likely spark discussions on:

  • The legal and constitutional processes for removing EC officials.
  • The potential impact on Ghana’s electoral credibility and political stability.
  • Whether the NDC’s push will face resistance from civil society and other stakeholders.
