Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has announced his withdrawal from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing security threats to his supporters after a violent altercation in Kumasi left one person hospitalized.
Incident Leading to Withdrawal
The decision follows a brutal stabbing incident involving a KNUST student, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, who was hired by Agyapong’s Team to perform at the event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi.
According to Agyapong’s team, a wealthy associate of the former MP donated money to the Jama group after their performance. However, armed men—allegedly linked to the NPP—reportedly intercepted and seized the money by force. A confrontation ensued, leading to gunshots and the stabbing of a Jama group member.
The victim was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving treatment. Agyapong’s team has since filed an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.
Agyapong’s Statement
Addressing the media, Agyapong confirmed his withdrawal, stating:
“Because of what happened yesterday, myself and my team want to pull out because lives are threatened. I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can do his campaign.”
He further vowed to seek justice for the victim, emphasizing that the safety of his supporters was his top priority.
Political Implications
Agyapong’s abrupt exit from the NPP’s tour raises concerns about internal tensions within the party, particularly as the 2024 elections approach. His vocal stance against the attack and decision to step away from the campaign trail could signal further divisions or trigger a broader security review for NPP events.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the incident, with pressure mounting to identify and prosecute the armed assailants. The NPP has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
What’s Next?
With Agyapong’s withdrawal, questions linger over:
-
Potential fallout within the NPP.
-
Security measures for future political rallies.
-
Legal repercussions for those involved in the violence.
As the situation develops, civil society groups and political analysts are calling for restraint and accountability to prevent further escalation.
