NPP Tensions Flare as Kennedy Agyapong Clashes with Bono Chairman Abronye During Bawumia’s Tour

A heated confrontation erupted between former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong and Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s national thank-you tour in Berekum on Monday. The exchange nearly derailed the event, exposing deep divisions within the party.

Abronye’s Provocative Remarks Spark Outburst

As the regional chairman, Abronye delivered the welcome address, where he took veiled shots at individuals advocating for unity within the NPP. He accused some party members of hypocrisy, claiming that their past divisive statements had been exploited by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 elections.

Abronye also dismissed Agyapong’s recent proposal for the party to grant amnesty to suspended and former members, arguing that it would reward indiscipline.

“This party needs discipline, and I do not support such a proposal,” Abronye declared. “Those pushing for amnesty and unity now are the same people who publicly attacked the party and contributed to our defeat.”

Kennedy Agyapong Fires Back

A visibly agitated Agyapong hit back during his turn to speak, launching a scathing attack on Abronye’s leadership and financial contributions to the party.

“Some people talk as if they own the party, but they don’t. If we are looking for real men in the NPP, they don’t measure up,” Agyapong fumed. “Their financial contributions are minimal. They go around begging, yet they have the mouth to talk. Even poor people want to speak their minds—how much more rich men like us? Who born dog!”

He further criticized Abronye’s performance as regional chairman, pointing out that the NPP holds only one parliamentary seat in the Bono Region.

Abronye Defends His Record

Earlier, Abronye had defended his tenure, blaming the party’s poor performance in the region on government neglect. He claimed that despite the NPP’s strong support in 2016 and 2020, key developmental projects, particularly road infrastructure, were ignored between 2017 and 2024.

Implications for Party Unity

The public clash highlights lingering tensions within the NPP as it grapples with post-election reconciliation. While Agyapong has been pushing for inclusivity and amnesty, hardliners like Abronye insist on strict discipline, fearing that leniency could encourage future rebellion.

The incident also raises questions about internal cohesion as the party prepares for future elections. With factions still at odds, the NPP’s ability to present a united front remains uncertain.
