The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has vehemently denied corruption allegations made against him by Kwame Asare Obeng, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, widely known as A Plus.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, April 30, Dr. Ayine dismissed the claims as baseless and challenged his accuser to substantiate the allegations with concrete evidence. The controversy stems from a Facebook post by A Plus, who accused the Attorney General of manipulating the drafting and passage of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy in 2021 for personal gain while in opposition.
A Plus alleged that Dr. Ayine had orchestrated changes in the leadership of the relevant parliamentary committee to benefit a close associate. He further warned that he would expose more corruption if provoked. However, Dr. Ayine refuted these accusations, describing them as “utter falsehoods” and insisting that he had no involvement in the legislative process concerning the levy.
“I was never a member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, nor did I have any influence over its composition,” Dr. Ayine stated, emphasizing that he possesses parliamentary records to support his position. He reaffirmed his commitment to integrity, declaring, “As Attorney General, I have never engaged in corruption or accepted bribes in public office. The President would not have appointed me if there were doubts about my integrity.”
The Minister dared A Plus to move beyond social media accusations and present any proof of misconduct in a formal setting. “If A Plus has credible evidence, I challenge him to hold a press conference or report to the police instead of making unsubstantiated claims online,” he asserted.
In a bold retort, Dr. Ayine warned that he was prepared to confront the allegations head-on. “In my hometown, we do not fear mudslinging—we confront it directly. I am ready to engage A Plus in any forum to clear my name,” he declared.
Additionally, the Attorney General suggested that the MP’s accusations might be linked to his own controversies, hinting at A Plus’s alleged involvement in the National Service ghost names scandal. He urged journalists to scrutinize the MP’s motives and past conduct.
The dispute has sparked public debate, with many calling for transparency and accountability from public officials. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders await further developments, including any potential legal action or official investigations into the allegations.
