Prosecute Corrupt Officials Caugh In Coruption Scandals

The Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng must move beyond investigations and start prosecuting corruption-related cases, anti-corruption campaigner, Vitus Azeem has said.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday released its half yearly report detailing activities, innovations and steps taken to curb corruption-related offences in Ghana.

The OSP had earlier recovered over GHC1 million in import duties not paid to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) by Labianca Foods.

“The Ghanaian expectations which the president raise when he set up the office, I think have still not been met, people expect more of this, not just investigations, but prosecutions and recoveries of money,” Azeem told Asaase News.

“I think the office has powers to prosecute, if they find it necessary, so that should be the logical conclusion of most of these investigations, because we have reached a stage where just recovering stolen monies is not enough.

“We now need to make it criminal that you have taken these monies illegally and you have to go to court for it, and if the court finds you guilty, then the necessary action will be taken against you. It doesn’t take away his successes, but we still expect more,” Azeem added.

Commendation

Azeem, however, commended the Special Prosecutor for successfully recovering some monies to the state.

“The Special Prosecutor deserves commendations at least we have examples of cases that he has successfully investigated and recovered money, so it’s commendable,” he added.
