Newly elected Independent Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, has disclosed that both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are courting him to join their respective caucuses in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
A Plus, a prominent musician-turned-politician and former supporter of the NPP, won the Gomoa Central seat convincingly in the recent parliamentary elections as an independent candidate. His victory has sparked significant political interest, with both major parties vying for his allegiance to strengthen their influence in the 9th parliament.
In a social media post, A Plus revealed that the NPP, led by his long-time friend and former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has approached him with an enticing offer. According to the outspoken legislator, the party has assured him they would not field a candidate in Gomoa Central during the 2028 elections if he aligns with them in parliament.
The NDC, Ghana’s main opposition party, has also reached out, leaving A Plus in a dilemma over which caucus to join. While expressing his gratitude for the offers, he admitted that his decision would inevitably disappoint one of the two political camps.
A Plus, a former critic of the NPP despite his past allegiance to the party, has gained a reputation for his independent and often critical stance on governance issues in Ghana.
Meanwhile, constituents in Gomoa Central will be watching closely to see how their newly elected MP navigates this critical juncture.
Kwame A Plus is expected to announce his decision in the next few hours, but it is clear that the choice will carry significant political and personal ramifications for the independent politician.
