Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, has publicly criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for its decision to terminate the contracts of individuals appointed by the previous administration. Dr. Bawumia described the move as politically motivated and detrimental to Ghana’s workforce and democratic institutions.
In a Facebook post on February 19, the former vice president expressed his disapproval, stating that the Mahama administration should prioritize job creation rather than exacerbating unemployment through what he termed as unjust dismissals. He emphasized that the terminations have not been limited to political appointees but have also affected career professionals, including directors, security personnel, nurses, and teachers.
Dr. Bawumia condemned the actions as a threat to Ghana’s democracy, urging President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the government’s approach. He called for fairness and adherence to constitutional principles, stressing that the dismissals undermine the stability of public institutions and the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.
In his appeal, Dr. Bawumia urged President Mahama to demonstrate leadership by reversing the dismissals and focusing on policies that protect jobs, strengthen institutions, and uphold democratic governance. He emphasized the need for the government to act in the interest of all citizens, rather than engaging in actions that deepen political divisions and economic hardship.
The statement has sparked further debate on the government’s employment policies, with many calling for transparency and accountability in public sector appointments and dismissals.
