The double-track system will not be adopted this year, according to the Ministry of Education, as first-year Senior High School pupils report to school today, Monday, April 4, 2022.
The double-track system was implemented in 2018 to relieve school overcrowding and make room for the predicted rise in the number of Junior High School pupils transferring to Senior High Schools.
The method was widely panned, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, stated in a press conference in June 2021 that it would take two to three years to abolish it.
However, Kwasi Kwarteng, the Education Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, told Citi News that the double-track system will not be implemented this year since appropriate preparations have been made to welcome first-year students.
“This time around, we are not going to see the arrangement where we divide pupils into two groups and have one group go to school and the other group come to school after a few weeks or months, we are not going to see that arrangement again.” In terms of infrastructure, there has been a considerable improvement,” he remarked.
The constrained infrastructural scenario that spurred the double-track, according to him, has improved.
He claimed that the GETFund had insured the completion of roughly 1,400 infrastructure projects, allowing the government to suspend the double-track system.
“An infrastructure analysis conducted by GETFund in 2017 revealed that over 3,700 projects had been abandoned. Over 1,400 of these projects have been completed since last year, so clearly the effect of this is accommodation to a considerable extent, bringing a significant improvement in the accommodation crisis we’ve been discussing.”
People who are still having trouble with placement, Kwasi Kwarteng said, should stay cool because the resolution centers are still open.
“Even though some first-year students will be joining, our resolutions centers will still be available to assist students who are having problems with their placements and require support,” he said.
