SHS Students Bemoan Delayed Funds, Food Shortages

The Ashanti region’s numerous Student Representative Councils (SRCs) are calling for quick action to end the financial delays and food shortages that are hurting the region’s Senior High Schools (SHS).

In an address to mark the commencement of its 25th Congress and the beginning of the chapter’s silver jubilee in the Ashanti Regional capital of Kumasi, the student body made the call.

The kids ask the government to revisit the Free SHS funding program and the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s operations in order to alleviate school hardship.

The Ashanti Region’s Students Representative Council’s comments appear to be similar to those raised by numerous Senior High Schools dealing with food shortages.

Delancy Ama Aya Kye, SRC President, spoke at the commencement of the 25th Annual Congress, recounting tense situations where schools’ menus were missed owing to food shortages.

She requested that the government reassess its food supply policy while it resolves its financial obligations to the Food Buffer Stock Company in order to alleviate supply bottlenecks.

The student body also sought a long-term solution to the ongoing funding delays for academic and co-curricular activities.

Ms. Aya Kye expressed her displeasure that schools had been forced to halt extracurricular programs in sports, culture, science, and mathematics.

The students also proposed that the government reinstate the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) fees system with a regulated maximum capping system to allow parents to fund their children’s schools’ lowest expenditure requests.

The SRC has planned a number of events, including a homecoming ceremony, to commemorate its 25 years of existence, which began under the presidency of Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the current Minister of Education, who also served as the first president of the student body.
