Mahama Likely To Be Jailed Two Years Over False Passport Claim
Former President John Dramani Mahama is likely to face prosecution and jail sentence of not more than two years after he was accused of guaranteeing for his brother to procure a Ghanaian passport with false information.
Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu had disclosed that Mahama had guaranteed a passport application forms for his younger brother, Samuel Adam Mahama containing false information.
According to Amidu, Samuel Mahama had indicated that he attended University of Ghana, Legon from January 6, 1992, to November 4, 1994 which is entirely false, however, John Mahama went ahead to guarantee for him.
Dissecting the issue, lawyer Patriot Faisal Ibrahim wrote that the action by the former president is a a breach of Section 15 of the Passport and Travel Certificate Decree, 1967, NLCD 155 which states that: “A person who makes a statement which is, to the knowledge of that person untrue for the purpose of procuring a passport or a travel certificate for that or any other person commits an offence.”
Punishment for this offence can lead to 2 years imprisonment, a fine or both.
This makes John Dramani Mahama a candidate for jail.
