Ghana Discovers Iron Ore In Commercial Quantities At Akokorowa In Oti Region

Iron Ore has been discovered in commercial quantities at Akokorowa, a farming community in the Oti Region, this portal has learned.

Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor made this disclosure when he toured the Area on Tuesday.

The Ghana Geological Survey Authority led the discovery of the large quantities of Iron ore deposits.

The iron ore is 55.22 weight per cent (fe) and of a higher grade.

Mr Jinapor at a meeting with the chiefs and people of Akokrowa on Tuesday (December 14, 2021) said the government will ensure that the commodity found in the area benefits the people.

He said government is determined to provide value addition to its raw commodity and would ensure that the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development work closely with the GGSA and the community to ensure that full value chain is retained in the region and the country.

Although Ghana has a wide range of minerals, only some gold, diamonds, manganese, and bauxite (the principal ore of aluminum) are exploited.

Gold mining, with an unbroken history dating from the 15th century, is the oldest of these extraction industries; the others are of 20th-century origin—the working of manganese dating from 1916, diamonds from 1919, and bauxite from 1942. There are also reserves of limestone and salt, in which the country is self-sufficient with a surplus for export. There are also extensive supplies of building stone, gravel, and sand.

It is expected that further research will be conducted with this discovery so that the country will reap the benefits accordingly.
