Display of Ghana Flag On Burj Khalifa Was Free – GIPC

The Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) has debunked claims suggesting that the projection of the national flag on to the tallest building in the world, known as the Burj Khalifa, came at a huge cost to Ghana.

The iconic building was lit up in the bright colours of the Ghanaian flag during Dubai Expo 2020, where the Government of Ghana hoped to make a good case for investment in the Ghanaian economy, the iconic display being an integral part of that marketing process.

Social media commentaries have claimed that Ghana had to pay to get its flag displayed on the edifice.

However, a GIPC statement issued on Friday (11 March 2022) said: “In no uncertain terms, the owner of Emaar Properties, Dubai, decided to place our national flag on the Burj Khalifa for free as a gesture of goodwill and to honour Ghana and His Excellency, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, during the Ghana Day Celebration to culminate our participation in the Dubai Expo.”
