Fuel Hike: COPEC to Picket At Finance Ministry Over Restoration of PSRL

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) has threatened to picket at the Ministry of Finance over the restoration Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy.

Reacting to the announcement by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), the Executive Secretary for COPEC, Duncan Amoah said the Finance Ministry would have to go to Parliament for the appropriate legislation to be passed for Ghanaians to know the specific amount and “not a semblance of stabilization levy.”

According to him, there is no stabilization for anyone within the deregulation environment adding that “to charge the trotro-driver something in the name of stabilization and recovery within a deregulated environment is simply unthinkable.”

“We are at the moment working on a notice to the Finance Ministry to consider within the next seven days withdrawing this levy sine die. Till they are able to go back to Parliament and probably ask for a specific levy to be passed for the subsidy of premix. Even though that in itself would also have a whole discussion about it,” the Executive Director disclosed.

He continued “At the time when crude prices had already crossed 90 dollars a barrel the least that could have been done for all of us would at least wait for the price to ease at the international market. But whiles prices are going up we are also enforcing levies and that would be a double slap. In seven days if the Finance Minister refuses to heed, I can assure that we will picket and sleep at the Finance Ministry until our complaints are adequately heeded.”

The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has announced the restoration of the price stabilization and recovery levies (PSRL) on petrol, diesel, and LPG effective 1st February 2022.
