Akufo-Addo Gov’t Has Staged Several Constitutional Coups Since Winning Power – Lecturer
Dr Rainer Akumperigya, a lecturer at GIMPA has accused the Akufo-Addo led government of staging coup since grabbing power in 2016.
According to him a coup is not only when the military takes over with gun and overthrow the president.
He said “a coup is the abrogation/suspension of Constitutional Rule; often, together with some or all of its architecture. The President and his appointees are products of an essential part of the Constitutional architecture, and so, their removal is only an incident of, but not the coup itself.
Understood this way, this government has conducted several coups; against itself in the manner it has put our Constitutional Rule in abeyance, not once, but on countless times,” Dr Rainer asserted.
He continued: The type of governance we have experienced since 2017-the vindictiveness, the abuse and arrogance of power, the shameless corruption and mismanagement of our economy, if the closest we have come to a coup is the mere expression of intent by an activist, then our democracy is more resilient than we admit.
Dr Rainer advised the government to channel state resources into more prudent ventures; noting that the arrest of fixthecountry convenor for threatening a coup is only a ‘chasing of shadows’.
