Supporters Of Alan Kyerematen’s Movement For Change Protest Arrest Of Hopeson Adorye

On May 22, 2024, a group of supporters from Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change (M4C) gathered at the Ministries Police Station to demand the release of Hopeson Adorye, a prominent figure in their movement. The protest, marked by fervent accusations of political bias, was triggered by Adorye’s recent arrest, which his supporters allege is politically motivated.

Hopeson Adorye, formerly affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was detained following a controversial interview on Accra FM on May 10, 2024. During the interview, Adorye made startling admissions regarding his involvement in voter intimidation tactics during the December 2016 elections. He claimed that dynamite blasts were orchestrated in the Volta Region, a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to deter voter turnout, a strategy he asserts contributed to the NPP’s electoral success.

One supporter, captured on camera at the protest, passionately questioned the legality of Adorye’s detention and suggested political interference. “Are we still in military rule or civilian rule? What is democracy about? We are here today; we are going to sleep with Hopeson Adorye here,” she declared, further stating, “If they are detaining Hopeson, then they have to detain every supporter of Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.”

The protestor also alleged that the government’s actions were aimed at silencing Adorye to prevent further disclosures that could potentially tarnish the NPP’s image. “Hopeson has been detained because he supports Alan Kyerematen and is revealing the NPP’s dirty deals that were used to gain power; we all know who is behind these instructions from above,” she added.

Adorye’s arrest has sparked significant controversy and debate, with M4C supporters accusing the authorities of using state power to stifle dissent and political opposition. As of now, Adorye remains in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.

The Ministries Police Station has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the specifics of the charges against Adorye or the progress of the investigation. However, the arrest has undeniably intensified political tensions, drawing national attention to the dynamics within Ghana’s political landscape.

The unfolding events surrounding Adorye’s detention and the subsequent protest underscore the deep divisions and contentious atmosphere as Ghana approaches its next electoral cycle.
