Alan Boy, Hopeson Adorye Arrested; Buaben Asamoah Suspects Political Agenda

Former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, has raised concerns over the recent arrest of Hopeson Adorye, a prominent member of the Movement for Change. Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsnite, Mr. Asamoa suggested that the nature of Mr. Adorye’s arrest indicates possible political motivations.

Mr. Adorye was detained at the Ministries Police Station following an interview he gave on Accra FM on May 10. During this interview, he admitted to orchestrating dynamite explosions in the Volta Region during the 2016 elections. These actions, he claimed, were intended to intimidate voters in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold to benefit the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mr. Asamoa, who was with Mr. Adorye at the police station, expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of the arrest. He noted that Mr. Adorye has been kept in police custody throughout the day and brought to the Ministries Police Station without clear charges. “Hopeson Adorye is not about to run away from Ghana or from his home because the police intend to charge him with the publication of false information. So, to go to the extent of keeping him all day in the police station and bringing him over to the Ministries to detain him, you point fingers backward at yourself that there is something political at play, and it’s not fair,” he stated.

Mr. Asamoa further asserted, “This is obviously politically motivated, there is no doubt about that.” He highlighted the context of their political affiliations, noting that both he and Mr. Adorye recently resigned from the NPP to join Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change.

The Ghana Police Service has indicated that Mr. Adorye is being investigated for the alleged publication of false information, related to his statements about the 2016 election events. Mr. Adorye, who serves as the director of special duties for the Movement for Change, is currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

The arrest has sparked significant political discourse, with implications for the broader political landscape as Ghana approaches its next electoral cycle.
