A new research from the Overseas Development Institute sheds light on the sale, impact, and governance of Chinese Deep Water Fishing (DWF) ahead of World Fishing Day.
According to the findings, almost 1000 Chinese DWF vessels were found to be registered overseas with 518 registered to African countries.
Ghana has the largest registery of Chinese DWF Vessels with 137 ships operating on it’s shores.
Five of the Vessels seem to be in breach of the 2002 Fisheries Act which limits fishing licenses for semi-industrial and industrial fishing vessels to only those flying Ghanaian Flags. This development means the Chinese are taking advantage of our weak law enforcement and at the same time harming the local fishing industry.
This development comes in the wake of public outcry against galamsey especially involving Chinese citizens.
