Former Supreme Court Judge, Julius Ansah Dies At 74

Justice Julius Ansah, a retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, has passed away at the age of 74, four years after his retirement. His death marks the end of a distinguished 41-year career in public service, during which he contributed significantly to the legal and judicial systems of the country.

Justice Ansah began his career at the Attorney-General’s Department in Koforidua, where he served as a National Service Person following his call to the Bar. He embarked on his judicial career in 1979 as a District Magistrate Grade II, with his first post at Assin Fosu in the Central Region. After two years, he was promoted to District Magistrate Grade I in 1981, and in 1986, he ascended to the Circuit Court.

By 1989, Justice Ansah had been promoted to the High Court, with his first assignment in Tamale, Northern Region, where he also served as the Supervising High Court Judge. His steady rise continued when he was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 1999. In 2004, he reached the pinnacle of the judiciary, joining the Supreme Court of Ghana.

Throughout his career, Justice Ansah held various significant positions, including serving on the General Legal Council and the Judicial Council. He also acted as Director of the Public Complaints Unit & Inspectorate Unit, and at one point, served as Acting Chief Justice.

Upon his retirement, a ceremony was held in his honor at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the judiciary. He was awarded a citation, a long service award, and a retirement package. At the ceremony, the then-Chief Justice, Justice Anin Yeboah, expressed both joy and sadness at Justice Ansah’s departure from the bench. He lauded Justice Ansah for his modesty, honesty, and professional excellence, qualities he exhibited from his early days as a magistrate through his time on the Supreme Court.

“Since his very first days on the Bench as a Magistrate some 41 years ago, Justice Julius Ansah has displayed modesty and honesty and demonstrated tremendous insight and excellence,” Chief Justice Yeboah remarked, commending his work across various courts and regions, including Assin Fosu, Tamale, and Sekondi, as well as his time on the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

Justice Julius Ansah leaves behind a lasting legacy of dedication and service to the legal profession and to Ghana.
