Bawumia Has Never Been Accused Or Investigated For Corruption – Napo Jabs Mahama At Manifesto Launch

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, praised the Vice President’s integrity and incorruptibility during the launch of the party’s 2024 manifesto in Takoradi. The former Energy Minister expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s character, asserting that he has never been accused or investigated for corruption throughout his public service career.

“I know Dr. Alhaji Bawumia. He is not corrupt and will not be corrupted. In his public life, he has never been accused of corruption and has never been investigated for corruption,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh stated, subtly contrasting Dr. Bawumia’s record with that of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s remarks appear to reference ongoing debates surrounding the controversial Airbus scandal, which has been linked to the Mahama administration. The scandal gained international attention, with allegations that officials connected to Ghana received bribes from Airbus to secure the sale of military aircraft. In response to these allegations, Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor launched an investigation in February 2020.

While former President Mahama was identified by international courts as a central figure in the case, the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, confirmed that Mahama did not directly engage in corrupt activities related to the Airbus deal. Despite this, the scandal has continued to be a source of political contention.

Mahama has consistently denied any involvement, challenging the Akufo-Addo government to prosecute him if found guilty. The Airbus scandal dates back to deals for military aircraft between 2011 and 2015, which were criticized for being non-transparent and financially questionable by figures like then-Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
