A peace initiative intended to foster unity between students of Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute ended in chaos on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, when a stone-throwing clash broke out, leaving several students injured. The event, organized by school authorities in collaboration with Kpalwega traditional rulers, was aimed at resolving the long-standing rivalry between the two institutions, which are separated only by the Bolga-Bawku Road.
Tensions flared when a student from one school crossed over to interact with students from the other, triggering hostility. What started as a minor altercation quickly spiraled out of control, with students from both sides hurling stones at each other. The Bawku Divisional Police Command intervened to restore order, but not before multiple students sustained injuries of varying severity. School authorities confirmed that the injured were rushed to local hospitals in Bawku for treatment.
Despite the violence, the peace event continued, with senior prefects from both schools playing a pivotal role in ensuring its completion. The incident, however, has raised concerns about the deep-seated tensions between the two institutions, which have a history of conflicts over the years.
In response to the clash, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been called in to address the underlying issues and implement measures to prevent future outbreaks of violence. The recurring conflicts highlight the challenges of fostering unity in an environment marked by historical rivalries, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to promote dialogue and reconciliation among students.
