Supreme Court To Deliver Judgment On Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s Applications Today

Kumi, who has been embroiled in a legal battle, is challenging a February 19 ruling by the Koforidua High Court, presided over by Justice Emmanuel Senyo Amedahe, which found him guilty of contempt. In his first application, the MP is asking the Apex Court to dismiss the conviction and issue an order of prohibition to prevent Justice Amedahe from proceeding with sentencing.

The Supreme Court will today, Wednesday, June 11, rule on two separate applications filed by Ernest Kumi, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia. The applications seek to overturn a High Court contempt conviction and an interim injunction barring him from acting as the constituency’s MP.

In his second application, Kumi is seeking an order of certiorari to quash the High Court’s decisions, including the February 19 ruling, a December 31, 2024 petition, and an interim injunction issued on January 2, which restrained him from performing his parliamentary duties. He argues that these rulings stemmed from a “premature election petition” filed against him.

The case was last heard on April 30, when a Supreme Court panel led by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang deferred judgment due to workload constraints. The court then scheduled June 11 as the new date for its decision.

The ruling will be crucial in determining whether Kumi retains his parliamentary status or faces further legal consequences. Legal analysts and political observers are keenly awaiting the outcome, as it could have significant implications for parliamentary proceedings and future election dispute cases.
