Evans Nimako, the director of elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the governing party is poised for a historic and successful regional delegates’ conference starting this Friday (27 May).

The delegates’ conference will elect regional party officers to steer the affairs of the party at the regional levels for the next four years.

Eight regions – Ahafo, Bono East, Central, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Western North – are all having their elections on Friday.

Delegates in Eastern, Ashanti, Greater Accra, Volta, Upper West, Oti and Western regions will hold their elections on Saturday followed by Bono Region on Sunday.

Talking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on The Asaase Breakfast Show ahead of the elections, Nimako said: “I must say it’s been a bit tough but we are on. The party is set to have its regional annual delegates’ conference from tomorrow Friday to Sunday (29 May) all things being equal.”

Security

“So far venues have been arranged, discussion with the Electoral Commission has been concluded and Ghana Police Service is ready to provide us with the necessary security arrangements,” Nimako said.

“Delegates to conference are set. We have all regional executive committee members, all Members of Parliament in the region, who are delegates to the conference, all constituency executives. So, for instance in Greater Accra where we have 34 constituencies, all executives in the 34 are delegates to the conference and run same across the region,” he added.

Change of venue

The director of elections said the party has agreed to change the venue for elections in the Ashanti and Volta regions.

“Yesterday, the Dan Botwe Committee directed that venues which are the mandate of the election committee must be done in consultation with all appropriate stakeholders. In view of that the Ashanti Regional elections committee has decided to change their venue and change their date.

“Discussions are ongoing and by midday today, we have conclusion to their discussion. It also came up in the Volta Region where the Dan Botwe Committee directed that the venue be changed and this has been communicated to the elections committee. We are ready to have a successful regional congress,” he said.

Apart from the regional chairmanship positions, among the other posts to be contested during the regional annual delegates’ conference are first regional vice-chairperson, second regional vice-chairperson, regional secretary, assistant regional secretary and regional treasurer.
