“Nya as3m hw3”, a famous Akan adage which literally translates as “have an issue and see”, is an adage that adequately summarizes maverick politician, Kennedy Agyapong’s position as at now.
The controversial MP, who clearly has issues when it comes to managing his anger, sat on his TV station and dared to castigate a judge who is presiding over a land litigation between the MP and another party, describing the said judge as “stupid”.
Having finally realized the veracity of his utterances, and the reality that he might be committed to prison for casting aspersions on the integrity of the court, the lawmaker finally issued an official apology letter yesterday, probably to attempt to purge himself of contempt.
However, it appears even sympathizers of his own political party have realized that he had no justification whatsoever to refer to a judge in the manner in which he did.
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, an openly confessed sympathizer of the ruling NPP has asked the court not to tamper justice with mercy, but to bring the MP to face the full rigours of the law for his actions.
According to lawyer Ampaw, the Assin Central MP must be shown his “smoothness level”.
“It is normal for someone to apologise after realizing that he has made an error. It’s a signal that he wants to be purged of contempt. But that doesn’t take away the sins. I was totally shocked and disappointed when I heard him. We have pampered Kennedy Agyapong too much and God is using this contempt charges to let him know that no one is above the law,” he stated.
According to lawyer Ampaw, the court will not be setting a good precedent if they let the MP off the hook.
