NPP Condemns Altercations During Parliamentary Primaries

Published

on

The New Patriotic Party in a statement has condemned issues of altercations which took place during their just ended parliamentary primaries.

A statement issued by National Chairman, Freddie Blay described the incidents as unacceptable and revealed investigations are underway.

“The party is already initiating moves to investigate them thoroughly and if necessary apply the appropriate sanctions. We must also discourage the unfortunate escalating occurrences of alleged influence-peddling and inducements across the board, acknowledging that these definitely constitute a threat to Ghana’s fledging and young democracy,” the statement read.

It asked all members of the party to close their ranks and focus on winning the 2020 elections.

Read the full statement below:

On behalf of the National Executive Committee of our party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I express my sincere appreciation to all contestants and delegates for their efforts in seeing to the successful organization of the just ended 2020 NPP Parliamentary Primaries conducted in most constituencies where we have NPP members of Parliament.

I also thank the officers of the Electoral Commission for yet again rising up to the occasion of supervising the elections in a fair and transparent manner.

We equally thank our friends from the media who have given comprehensive coverage and reportage and generated much interest in this year’s Primaries, even in the face of COVID 19 pandemic.

By all standards, the primaries have been a well-conducted and keenly contested one.

The contest has demonstrated the vibrancy and attractiveness of the NPP.

As we conclude this phase of our internal parliamentary elections, I will urge all contestants who won to be magnanimous in their victory celebrations and those who lost to be gracious in accepting their loses and personal setbacks, the NPP and our country Ghana remain the ultimate winners.

Those who may still have disagreements and complains with the process are encouraged to activate the Party’s laid down procedures for redress and reconciliation.

As a party, let us all endeavour to guard against giving ammunition to our opponents, for vicious and character assassinating attacks.

Reported cases of Altercations in a few polling stations are unacceptable and the party strongly condemns that.

The party is already initiating moves to investigate them thoroughly and if necessary apply the appropriate sanctions. We must also discourage the unfortunate escalating occurrences of alleged influence-peddling and inducements across the board, acknowledging that these definitely constitute a threat to Ghana’s fledging and young democracy.

Rather than dividing our ranks, I believe the successful outcome of this Parliamentary Primaries which has been in the spirit of family competition, friendly hostilities and sportsmanship, be used by all aspirants to energize the grassroots, mobilize our supporters for the compilation exercise of the EC’s new voters’ register and galvanize our energies towards the December polls.

Day in day out, the New Patriotic Party, continue to set new standards in confronting challenges with the development of our constitutional democracy. Indeed, we have demonstrated beyond doubt, that as a people, we can overcome the limitations this COVID 19 pandemic poses to our society and manage it in a manner that enables us to continue to carry out our constitutional privileges, economic activities and social lives.

Just as the President, H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo indicated, the NPP cannot let the good people of Ghana down after voting overwhelmingly for the party in the 2016 general elections.

The Ghanaian electorates have confidence in the visionary and exemplary leadership of the President and are largely convinced that the New Patriotic Party has what it takes to bring about prosperity and dignity to the good people of Ghana.

Therefore, our conduct and activities as party members must be geared towards sustaining that confidence.

Obviously, we must acknowledge that the president is delivering well on his mandate, however, we must bear in mind that we are not out of the woods yet.

The undoubting task of nation-building lies ahead of us and this is inextricably linked to our December 2020 national elections victory.

All in all, I sincerely thank you.

NPP Primaries To Blame For Surge In Covid-19 Cases – Fmr NDC MP

Published

on

Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Aspirant for Nkwanta South, Richard Manuribe has suggested that the just ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries is to blame for the increasing Coronavirus cases.

According to him, the blatant diregard for Covid-19 protocols during the primaries has led to the spike in the cases.

Speaking on Kingdom FM’s ‘Pae Mu Ka’ he noted that, “the just ended NPP primaries is the reason why Ghana is recording more cases because when they went for the primaries the party members flouted the Covid-19 protocols.”

Richard Manuribe further blamed President Akufo Addo for failing to implement certain measures to curb the spread of the virus in Ghana.

He stated, “President Nana Akufo-Addo has fallen short of combating the coronavirus in Ghana as cases continue to soar.’’

Ghana’s total case count as at morning of July 4, stood at 19,388, with active cases standing at 4,941 and 14,330 recoveries. Death toll at 117.

NPP Prioritises Elections Over Safety of Ghanaians – Minority

Published

on

The Minority in Parliament has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of being more interested in the upcoming elections than ensuring the safety of Ghanaians amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

A statement released under the signature of the Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu noted the observance of non compliance of Covid-19 protocols at various registration centres.

It said the Electoral Commission ignored experts advice and are risking Ghanaian lives with overcrowding at various centres which only increases the chances of citizens contracting the virus.

“This non-compliance was also demonstrated during the just-ended NPP parliamentary primaries which confirms the fact that NPP is promoting the spread of the infection because they have prioritised elections over the safety of human lives,” part of the statement read.

It added, “If this continues, there will be more morbidities and mortalities, which will overwhelm the health system in the country.”

The country’s Covid-19 case count currently stands at 19,388 with 117 deaths.

Should Pastors and Covid-19 Offenders Remain in Jail? Ablakwa Quizzes As Carlos Ahenkorah Prosecution Drags On

Published

on

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has waded in on the immediate-past Deputy Trade Minister, Carlos Kinsley Ahenkorah’s Coronavirus brouhaha.

Carlos Ahenkorah incurred the wrath of Ghanaians after he toured some Electoral Commission registration centres while he had tested positive for the Coronavirus.

In an interview he said, “I drove in my car and got there, got down, and spoke far away with the EC officer who explained the issue to me. I told her I will report this to their boss and then I just left. I was very careful. It is important for people like us to know their status because whether you like it not, we will go into the midst of people.”

He had been heavily criticised after this comment which has eventually led to his resignation.

However, many are still calling for a possible prosecution for the MP just as has been done to some Covid-19 protocol offenders.

Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, on her part, believes the calls are unfounded and exaggerated.

Okudzeto Ablakwa joining the conversation quizzes if other Covid-19 offenders should remain in jail.

In a post on Facebook he asked, “should the Pastors and other Covid-19 offenders remain in jail?”
