In a groundbreaking development in Ghana’s democratic history, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged with a commanding majority in Parliament, based on provisional results from the 2024 general elections. This landmark achievement highlights the NDC’s resurgence and sets a pivotal stage as the country anticipates the official declaration of the presidential election results.
The NDC’s remarkable performance saw the party clinch over 180 seats out of the 276 available in Parliament. This success was bolstered by their dominance in traditional strongholds such as the Northern Region, Upper East Region, and Volta Region.
In the Northern Region, the NDC captured 11 out of 18 seats, reinforcing their influence in the area. The Upper East Region saw the party achieve a clean sweep, winning all 11 seats. Similarly, in the Volta Region, a bastion of NDC support, the party secured all 18 parliamentary seats.
The NDC also recorded significant victories in other regions. In the Oti Region, they claimed all 9 seats, while in the Central Region, they secured 18 out of 23 seats. Greater Accra Region, the nation’s capital, witnessed an extraordinary outcome, with the NDC winning 30 out of 34 seats, a significant gain that underscores their broad appeal.
Perhaps most strikingly, the NDC made notable inroads into regions traditionally dominated by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). In the Ashanti Region, often considered an NPP stronghold, the NDC managed to win 7 out of 47 seats, reflecting a shift in voter dynamics and growing support for the opposition party.
The provisional results underscore the NDC’s ability to consolidate support across diverse regions, signaling a strong comeback in Ghanaian politics. As the Electoral Commission continues to tally the remaining votes, the NDC’s parliamentary majority positions them advantageously to form the next government.
