NDC Condemns Electoral Commission’s Decision to Rerun Polls in Dome-Kwabenya

The EC announced the rerun after suspending the constituency’s results for a third time due to a missing pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station. Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, explained that the lack of this crucial document necessitated a repeat of voting at the station.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has strongly opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to conduct a rerun at a polling station in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, following ongoing disputes over the parliamentary election results.

However, the NDC claims their candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, won the parliamentary election held on December 7 and sees no justification for the rerun. Addressing the media, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT, argued that the results should stand without including the contested polling station.

“There is a margin of 1,154 votes in favour of Elikplim. The Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station has 689 registered voters. Even if we exclude this station entirely, the margin remains decisive,” Dr. Tanko-Computer asserted, accusing the EC of mismanaging the process and making mathematical errors.

He further criticised the Commission’s handling of the issue. “Elikplim Akurugu has already won this election. Any attempt to impose a rerun is unacceptable, and we will not recognise it,” he said.

The controversy has sparked tensions in the Dome-Kwabenya community, with the NDC warning of potential unrest if the rerun proceeds. The party’s Greater Accra Regional Organiser, Anthony Nukpenu, expressed concerns about the safety of electoral officials in the event of a rerun, highlighting heightened emotions among residents.

“The people in this community have already cast their votes, and they did so overwhelmingly for Elikplim Akurugu. Any attempt to bring in ballot boxes or conduct another vote is likely to escalate tensions,” Nukpenu told Channel One Newsroom on Sunday. “We cannot guarantee the safety of those who come to facilitate this rerun.”

The EC’s decision has become a flashpoint in a closely contested constituency, with the NDC insisting that the original results reflect the will of the voters and should not be revisited.
