The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, for his adept leadership during Tuesday’s parliamentary session. In a statement released by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on October 22, the NDC praised the Speaker’s handling of proceedings, describing his approach as a benchmark for effective parliamentary governance.
The NDC lauded Bagbin’s maturity and impartiality, noting that his leadership demonstrated a clear commitment to protecting the integrity of Parliament while balancing the interests of the legislative body and the nation at large. According to the party, his actions have significantly reinforced the credibility of the institution. The NDC expressed optimism that Speaker Bagbin will continue to safeguard Parliament’s independence and ensure that it functions in the best interests of the Ghanaian people.
“We commend him for working in the interest of both Parliament and the people of Ghana, and for strengthening the integrity of Parliament through his leadership,” the statement read.
This commendation follows Speaker Bagbin’s decision on Tuesday to indefinitely adjourn parliamentary proceedings after a heated session marked by intense disagreements between MPs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC. The disputes centered on the contentious issue of which caucus holds the majority in Parliament.
During the adjournment, Speaker Bagbin revealed that he had received a communication from the Supreme Court, instructing him to stay his earlier ruling which had declared four parliamentary seats vacant. However, the Speaker did not provide further details on the Court’s directive, leaving MPs and observers uncertain about its implications.
Though Bagbin noted that Parliament had sufficient numbers to conduct business, he pointed out that the required quorum to make decisions was lacking, prompting the adjournment of proceedings.
