As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) gears up for the 2024 elections, all indications point to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister, being announced as the running mate of the party’s flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. This announcement is expected next week, according to Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh has been actively preparing for this anticipated role, emphasizing his Asante heritage and advocating for stronger ties among Ghana’s diverse ethnic groups. His recent visits to various traditional leaders, including Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II in Accra, the Awoamefia of Anlo land, Torgbui Sri, and the Omanhene of Sefwi Wiawso, underscore his commitment to fostering unity and development.
“Our strength lies in our unity, and our progress is rooted in the cordiality and peaceful coexistence among our diverse ethnic groups,” Dr. Opoku Prempeh remarked during his visit to Ga Mantse. He highlighted the longstanding amicable relations between the Asante and Ga people, citing historical events and the enduring bonds between their leaders.
This strategic engagement is not limited to traditional authorities. Dr. Opoku Prempeh has also been in discussions with civil society leaders and media personalities, consolidating support across various sectors. His focus on inclusivity and unity resonates with the foundational principles of the NPP, originally a collective effort of Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds.
Despite his proactive outreach, some observers question what Dr. Opoku Prempeh brings to the table beyond his Asante lineage and close ties to the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. However, his supporters argue that his track record in public service and his emphasis on national unity make him a strong candidate.
Ga Mantse expressed his satisfaction with Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s visit, highlighting the importance of peaceful coexistence for national development. “I believe that we must guard the peace we have in our country jealously because it is that co-existence that allows for development. I am always inclined to people who are not divisive, and so I am happy to see you,” he said. He also looked forward to a forthcoming visit from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, further cementing the bond between the two regions.
Nana Akomea assured journalists that Dr. Bawumia will announce his running mate by the end of June. The campaign team remains in suspense about the final decision, although Dr. Opoku Prempeh is a frontrunner along with other notable candidates such as Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
Other potential candidates include Nana Akomea, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Irene Naa Torshie Addo, and Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, each bringing unique strengths to the table.
