Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has reaffirmed that the authority to elect Ghana’s next president lies solely with the citizens, not the commission itself.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, Ms. Mensa clarified that the EC does not influence or determine the outcome of elections. Instead, she stressed that the decision rests entirely with the electorate.
“As a commission, we do not have the power to decide who wins elections. The outcome is not within our control. The power lies with the good people of Ghana,” she said.
Ms. Mensa reiterated that only the citizens have the authority to choose their leader. “It is the candidate chosen by the citizens who will be declared president of the Republic of Ghana by the EC on December 7, 2024,” she concluded.
