Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday after falling ill during questioning by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, confirmed the incident but did not disclose details about the medical facility where he is receiving treatment.

“The interrogation process is not yet complete,” Kubi stated. “We will return to EOCO once his health improves, pending medical approval.”

Earlier, Wontumi had complied with an invitation from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over allegations of illegal mining activities, including operating without a license and breaching environmental regulations. Following the CID session, he was transferred to EOCO headquarters for further questioning on related matters.

Protests and Political Tensions

The arrest triggered unrest outside EOCO’s premises as NPP supporters and party officials gathered in protest. The escalating tension led to military deployment to maintain order.

NPP National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye accused state institutions of engaging in “political harassment,” vowing that the party would resist any perceived unfair targeting of its members. Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover criticized the manner of Wontumi’s arrest, describing it as a “Rambo-style operation,” and demanded that EOCO publicly clarify the charges against him.

Legal Challenges Mount

In addition to the EOCO investigation, Chairman Wontumi is expected to respond to a writ of summons filed by Exim Bank, adding to his legal troubles. The developments have intensified political discourse, with the NPP framing the situation as an attempt to undermine its leadership ahead of the 2024 elections.

As the situation unfolds, observers await further updates on Wontumi’s health and the legal proceedings against him. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the intersection of politics, law enforcement, and public perception in Ghana’s evolving democratic landscape.
