Anas Is An Extortionist And Blackmailer: Court Vindicates Ken Agyapong In 25 Million Defamation Suit

MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has been vindicated in the GHS 25 million Ghana Cedis defamation suit brought against him by award-winning investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

It will be recalled that following the aftermath of the screening of Anas’ Number 12 expose’ in 2018, the Assin Central MP called the journalist an extortionist and blackmailer among other things, claiming he uses his work to extort money from his victims.

Anas subsequently sued Kennedy Agyapong for 25m being costs for defaming him when he said [Anas] was a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil.

However, after years of deliberations, the court has held that Mr. Agyapong provided sufficient evidence to prove that the plaintiff used the findings of his work to solicit money from persons implicated in the evidence gathered by him.

The evidence adduced, according to the court, also proved that those who were able to pay the sums of money demanded by Anas and his associates, got exempted from videos that were shown to the public.

The court, therefore, concluded that what Anas is engaged in is not investigative journalism but rather investigative terrorism and that Mr. Agyapong was justified to call Anas “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil”.

Justice Eric Baah indicated that since the award of cost in such civil cases is at the discretion of the court, he will award cost of GHc 50,000.00 against the plaintiff [Anas Aremeyaw Anas].
