Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, has voiced his disappointment with former President John Agyekum Kufuor for publicly endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), ahead of Ghana’s general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Oyerepa TV on Monday, November 18, Kyerematen expressed frustration with Kufuor’s support for Bawumia, describing it as a breach of the neutrality expected from a respected statesman. Kyerematen, who previously served as a key member of the NPP but later formed the Movement for Change after parting ways with the party, highlighted the personal and political implications of Kufuor’s endorsement.
Kyerematen asserted that his innovative contributions during Kufuor’s presidency played a significant role in shaping the administration’s policies, claiming that up to 70% of the initiatives implemented under Kufuor’s leadership were based on his ideas. He argued that his experience and vision surpass those of the current NPP flagbearer.
The endorsement by Kufuor, which called on Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia as the best candidate to navigate the country through contemporary global challenges, has sparked considerable controversy. Kyerematen criticized this move, emphasizing that it could erode Kufuor’s reputation as a neutral elder statesman and attract unnecessary political hostility towards him.
While Kyerematen acknowledged his familial relationship with Kufuor and noted his efforts to avoid public confrontations, he warned against the negative consequences of overt political endorsements from former presidents. He urged Kufuor to adopt a more balanced approach to national politics to preserve his legacy and avoid further polarization.
