After Spending Millions On A New Register, EC Inaugurates 16-member C’ttee To Clean New Voter Register

Published

on

The Electoral Commission (EC) has inaugurated a voter registration adjudication committee to help expunge the names of multiple registrants from the voter register.

The 16-member multi-stakeholder committee which was inaugurated by the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Jean Mensa, in Accra Wednesday [August 5, 2020], will be required to manually determine the eligibility of persons who have been flagged for multiple registration through the de-duplication process to be on the voter roll.

Chaired by the Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Operations, Mr Samuel Tettey, the committee has six other officials of the EC; five representatives of political parties and four civil society organisations (CSOs) as its members.

Political parties with representation on the committee are the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

Throwing more light on the work of the committee, Mrs Mensa said the committee members would be presented with a number of cases that were flagged at the de-duplication stage of the multi-faceted mechanism to clean up the voters register.

She explained that the committee would deal with cases that concern persons who have different facial features but have some of their biometric features (fingerprints) matching other people’s.

“It will also determine the eligibility of persons who have same facial features and same fingerprints matching,” she said.

The mass voter registration exercise which started on June 31, will end Thursday [August 6, 2020], but the EC Chairperson said per its data, it was expecting that 16.5 million people would have registered by the end of the exercise.

The figure is 1. 5 million more than the projected 15 million eligible Ghanaians.

Mrs Mensa said the current figures were provisional and could go down subject to the outcome of the challenge system and the adjudication process.

NDC Must Lead The Campaign Against Western Togoland Secessionists – Political Activist

Published

on

A leading member of the CPP, James Kwabena Bomfeh has urged the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) to lead the charge against the sudden insurgency of secessionists in the Volta Region.

To him, those areas that the Homeland Study Group (HSG) are claiming ownership of are major strongholds of the NDC hence a separation from Ghana will go against the fortunes of party.

Contributing to the conversation on Kokrokoo on Peace FM, Thursday morning, Mr. Bomfeh advised the NDC to champion any campaign by the government to resists these secessionists.

He also tasked the government to start an all inclusive “No Campaign” and nip the actions of the Western Togolanders in the bud once and for all.

Zongos Don’t Need Your Mortuaries, They Need Schools – Bawumia To Mahama

Published

on

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has laughed off the NDC flagbearer’s promise to help construct morgues in Zongo communities if he wins power in the 2020 presidential elections.

According to Dr. Bawumia, what these deprived Zongo communities need are infrastructure especially Schools and not morgues as being mooted by the NDC and its flagbearer.

He wondered where Mr. Mahama has the idea from, adding that this shows the gulf in quality of thoughts between the two major political parties.

The Vice President stated that the NPP under President Akuffo-Addo is committed to uplifting the image of the Zongo communities.

He reiterated the NPP’s promise to build 16 model Senior High Schools in various Zongos in all 16 regions across the country under the Zongo Ministry.

You May Have Your Differences, But Don’t Set Ghana Ablaze- Manasseh Azure Cautions NDC And NPP

Published

on

Award-winning Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has cautioned the two main political parties in the country; NDC and NPP to ensure that they do not allow their differences to set the country ablaze as we approach election 2020.

In an article published under ‘The Africa We Want’ project which is Mobilizing Civil Society Support for Implementation of the African Governance Architecture and is being implemented with funding support from the European Commission, the renowned Journalist summarized the mood of the Country as we head for the polls in December.

The Investigative Journalist made some thought-provoking observations in the write-up as follows:

I have said that Ghana’s democracy is growing but not maturing because we have not strengthened our democratic institutions. Our governance is anything but transparent. It took two decades of active civil society campaign to get the Right to Information Act passed. A year after its passage, however, some state institutions are using disingenuous reasons to deny those who invoke the law to get public information.

Transparency and trust are important ingredients lacking in Ghana’s democratic soup. Going into this election, the main opposition party does not trust that the Electoral Commission will be a fair referee. This has always been the case in the history of Ghana but recent developments at the election body have heightened suspicions and mistrust.

In the 2016 election, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission was appointed by then-incumbent President John Mahama, who was contesting that election. The long-serving Dr Kwadwo Afari Gyan had retired and as the constitution required, the President had to get his replacement. This did not sit well with the opposition parties at the time.

When the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won that election, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission was removed from office on the basis of procurement infractions.
