Covid Update No.12- Indepth Details from the President’s Address

As part of sharing information on managing and preventive measures of the Covid19 virus, the Sunday updates by the president, Nana Akufo-Addo has become the norm since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Sunday night was no exception with update no.12 where the president had some information to share with citizens especially on senior high school final year students who are supposed to report to school in July. We have highlighted some key areas the president touched on.  

Below are some key areas the president touched on:

Senior High School Final Year Students

• Parents are encouraged to provide their their kids or children at least one face mask on their way to school.
• A total of 18,000 veronica buckets, 800,000 pieces of 200mls of sanitizers, 36,000 rolls of tissue paper, 36,000 gallons of liquid soap and 7,200 thermometers have been distributed.
• A maximum of 25 students will be committed in each class.
• All students in schools with boarding houses will be residents in these boarding houses whilst day students in schools without boarding housing facilities will commune from home.
• Staff and students will be required to adhere to enhanced hygiene protocols
• Eating in dining halls will be in appropriate numbers
• No visitors to the school will be allowed
• There would be no mass gatherings and no sporting activities
• Social distancing and the wearing of face mask are obligatory in our schools
• Care will be provided to the sick to nurses assigned to the school
• Enough school supplies will be distributed to all schools through the
• Government is also making available 30 buses and 840 pick-ups vehicles to senior high school that did not receive vehicles in 2016.
• Government would absorb the WASSCE fees of 13,837 students who would sit for the exams. 75.4million Ghana cedis will be spent on this.

According W.H.O asymptomatic patients, that is, those who have tested positive for the virus and are not exhibiting any symptoms after 14 days, “are not likely to be infectious and therefore are unlikely to be able to transfer the virus to one another.”

New Patient Discharge recovery policy has now been adopted by Ghana as some countries in European Union, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Honkong and Dubai.

• As at Saturday 20^th June, the total number of positive cases stood at 14,154 out of the 270,300 tests conducted.
• Under the revised policy, 5,925 persons have been recovered and been discharged.
• This brings the total number of recoveries to 10,473.
• Number of active cases are 3,596.
• 24 persons severely ill in hospitals and isolation centers.
• 6 persons critically ill.
• 4 persons on ventilators.
• 85 persons have regrettably died.

Solidarity Messages

The president thanked the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) for making their facility in Adweso available in the Ashanti Region and the catholic Bishops’ Conference for agreeing to use their facilities across the country for isolation centers in the fight against the Coivid19 disease.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Minister for Environment Science, Technology and Environment and Innovation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong who offered a seventy bed hospital in the Ashanti region as a Covid19 treatment center.

Appeal for funds

The president reiterated that, as result of the high cases in the greater Accra Region and the Ashanti Region, he would need investment in the following areas,

• Addition ICU bed facilities in Greater Accra Region, more medicines, consumables and equipment and anew treatment center for Ashanti Region.

Condolences to Deceased Frontliners

President Akufo- Addo sympathized with the death of Dr. Owusu Boateng, a pediatrician in SDA hospital in Kwadaso, Kumasi, and Sophia Addo,  a nurse in Tarkwa who both died in the line of duty.

Message for the Media

The president concluded by urging the media to exhibit positive work by educating the public on the preventive measures against the Covid19 disease.

He also went further to plead with citizens to stop the stigmatization as it has led people from not wanting to be tested for the virus hence making unknown infected people agents of the spread of the virus.

He assured parents that, he would be the last person to risk the lives of their children and such effective measures have been put in place to stop the contraction and spread of the virus among their wards in schools.
