You Commit Political Suicide By Endorsing Politicians – Gyampo Tells Chiefs

University of Ghana lecturer, Professor Ransford Gyampo has cautioned chiefs against backing politicians in the build up to election 2020.

In an article, he noted that chiefs who openly declare their support for a particular political leader or party lose their role as agent of development when the party exit power.

“What may not be easily known to many of the chiefs who flout the constitutional injunction is that, they commit political suicide by eroding their own respect, and role as agents of unity. They lose their role as countervailing forces and credible mediators in political impasse and conflict. They also lose their convening powers to summon their citizens for communal work. They also lose their role as agents of development, as no government will work with a chief who is a known political opponent,” part of the article read.

This comes after some chiefs endorsed both President Akufo-Addo and former president John Dramani Mahama.

The Okyenhene backed four more years for Nana Addo, insisting his tenure will end in 2024, while the Dormaahene also threw his weight behind John Dramani Mahama in their respective campaign tours.
