The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has firmly stated its opposition to any attempts to prevent Ghanaians living in Togo from participating in the upcoming general elections. Speaking at a rally in Ziope, a constituency along the Ghana-Togo border, the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, warned that the NDC would actively resist any form of discrimination aimed at blocking these voters from exercising their rights.
Asiedu Nketia questioned the government’s intentions regarding the implementation of the Representation of the People Amendment Law (ROPAL), a law designed to enable Ghanaians living abroad to vote. He drew attention to what he perceived as inconsistencies in its application, suggesting that the government is selectively preventing Ghanaians in Togo from voting, while allowing others in the diaspora, such as those in the U.S., to participate.
“The logic they are promoting is that if you’re a Ghanaian living in America and you fly into Kotoka International Airport, you can vote. But if you’re a Ghanaian living just across the border in Togo and come home to vote, they brand you as a Togolese and deny you that right. We cannot accept this form of discrimination,” he remarked.
He cautioned that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) may attempt to suppress votes in the NDC stronghold of Agotime Ziope by preventing Ghanaians from crossing the border to vote. He urged the electorate to remain resolute, reminding them of the NPP’s potential strategies to limit voter turnout by blocking their relatives living in Togo from participating in the elections.
Asiedu Nketia also called on the people of Agotime Ziope to vote decisively for the NDC, claiming that the constituency has suffered the most under the NPP administration. “You don’t need convincing to vote for the NDC. You suffer the most when the NPP is in power. If you want to continue living under that suffering, the choice is yours,” he asserted.
The NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Agotime Ziope, Charles Agbeve, encouraged constituents to turn out in large numbers on December 7th, 2024, emphasizing the party’s target of securing 25,000 votes in the constituency. He urged voters to remain committed to supporting the NDC to bring about the change they seek.
