A senior official of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr. Joseph Agyemang, widely known as Papa Bruno, tragically passed away after collapsing during a tense exchange with aggrieved parents at the Council’s Sekondi office. The incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, January 30, 2025.
The confrontation arose when frustrated parents and students, who had been summoned by WAEC for an inquiry into withheld West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, clashed with officials over procedural concerns. Reports indicate that WAEC had instructed affected students to enter a designated room for questioning without their parents, a directive that many parents opposed.
According to Rev. Father Canon Wryter, a parent who witnessed the incident, emotions ran high as parents demanded an apology for a remark made by one of the WAEC officials. As tensions escalated, Mr. Agyemang attempted to address the gathering but suddenly collapsed.
“I was seated in the office due to my position as a Reverend Father, while other parents stood outside looking stranded. During the argument, one of the WAEC officials made a comment that angered the parents, prompting them to demand an apology. Mr. Agyemang was about to address them when he suddenly collapsed. I was nearby, and he fell on me. His condition deteriorated, and he was rushed to Essikado Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after,” Rev. Father Wryter recounted in an interview with Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson on Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show on January 31.
Following the tragic event, Rev. Father Wryter urged WAEC and the government to expedite the resolution of the withheld results issue, as the delay has left many students in limbo regarding their tertiary education prospects.
“We appeal to the authorities to address this matter swiftly. University admissions have closed, and our children’s futures remain uncertain,” he emphasized.
The incident has intensified calls for WAEC to improve its engagement with stakeholders and ensure transparency in handling examination-related issues to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
