A recent national poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics indicates that a significant majority of Ghanaians are dissatisfied with the performance of Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Minority Leader and Ranking Member on the Appointments Committee of Parliament, in the ongoing ministerial vetting process.
The survey, which was carried out between January 30 and February 1, 2025, gathered responses from 952 participants through both online and field interviews. Findings reveal that 64% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with Afenyo Markin’s handling of the vetting process. Specifically, 44% stated they were “not satisfied at all,” while an additional 20% reported being generally dissatisfied. In contrast, only 8% of those surveyed indicated they were “extremely satisfied” with his role.
The results suggest growing public concern regarding the effectiveness and impartiality of the Appointments Committee. Additionally, the survey found that 77% of respondents believe the vetting process is being leveraged for political maneuvering rather than serving as an objective evaluation of nominees’ qualifications and suitability for office.
This wave of dissatisfaction comes at a time when parliamentary proceedings are under heightened scrutiny. The Speaker’s recent suspension of four Members of Parliament has further fueled debates, creating a division in public opinion. Despite the criticisms directed at Afenyo Markin, the poll also found that 63% of Ghanaians are generally satisfied with the overall performance of the Appointments Committee.
As the ministerial vetting continues, these findings highlight the need for greater transparency and objectivity in the parliamentary process to restore public confidence in the system.
