Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has begun a three-week medical leave on the advice of her doctors to prioritize her health and recuperation. The leave, which commenced on April 7, 2025, was confirmed by sources at Jubilee House, though official details remain limited.
The Vice President’s temporary absence follows reports of recent health challenges that initially required treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra before she sought further medical attention abroad. Despite her absence, government officials have reassured the public of her steady recovery.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, speaking during a community engagement in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 6, provided updates on her condition, stating that she is “recovering well” and is expected to return to her duties soon. He thanked Ghanaians and the diaspora for their prayers and support, which he credited for her progress.
Ablakwa also addressed speculations surrounding her health, dismissing what he called “baseless and unGhanaian propaganda” and urging the public to instead celebrate her resilience and contributions to national development. He emphasized her trailblazing legacy as a role model for young girls and women, highlighting her achievements in breaking barriers in academia and governance.
As the Vice President focuses on her recovery, the government has assured citizens that state affairs will continue uninterrupted. Further updates on her health and return to office are expected in the coming weeks.
