Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has strongly criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its opposition to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, labeling the party’s stance as disingenuous and divorced from public interest.

Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Justice Atuguba dismissed the NPP’s claims that President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend the Chief Justice was unconstitutional and undermined judicial independence. He challenged the party’s credibility on the matter, questioning its commitment to transparency and public welfare during its own tenure in government.

“How did they conduct themselves when they were in power? Did they act transparently in the interest of the people? Did they?” he retorted. “This is pure hypocrisy. The disregard for public interest in our political discourse is deeply troubling.”

Justice Atuguba also referenced the intense public scrutiny the Supreme Court faced before the elections, particularly on social media, where it was mockingly referred to as “Unanimous FC”—a jab at perceived judicial bias. He questioned why the NPP, while in office, failed to address such criticisms or defend judicial independence.

“Before the elections, the Supreme Court was constantly ridiculed as ‘Unanimous FC.’ Was it President Mahama behind that? The NPP was in power—what steps did they take to protect the judiciary’s integrity? he asked.

His remarks underscore growing concerns over political double standards and the prioritization of partisan agendas over genuine democratic principles. The retired judge’s comments have reignited debates about accountability, judicial independence, and the role of political actors in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic institutions.
