Trotro Crashes Into Ex-President Akufo-Addo’s Nima Residence, Injuring Three

The accident has sparked concerns over road safety and security near the former president’s residence. Unlike other high-profile government and diplomatic zones, no metal barricades or protective buffers separate the fence from the road, leaving it vulnerable to such incidents.

Trotro Driver drives into Akufo-Addo’s fence wall

A commercial minibus (Trotro) crashed into the perimeter fence of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s private residence in Nima on Tuesday evening, leaving three people injured. The cause of the accident remains unclear, but eyewitnesses suspect brake failure may have led to the vehicle veering off the road.

Details of the Incident

The collision occurred around 7:30 PM on July 16 along a busy stretch near the Nima Police Station, a high-traffic zone serving routes to Accra Central, Osu, and the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

According to witnesses, the green-colored Trotro suddenly lost control, smashing into the fence. Among the injured was the vehicle’s mate, who was reportedly coughing blood before being rushed to the hospital. The driver is currently in police custody assisting with investigations.

Security Concerns Raised

The accident has sparked concerns over road safety and security near the former president’s residence. Unlike other high-profile government and diplomatic zones, no metal barricades or protective buffers separate the fence from the road, leaving it vulnerable to such incidents.

Residents and commuters have called for immediate safety measures, including speed bumps or reinforced barriers, to prevent future accidents—especially given the area’s heavy traffic flow.

Police Investigation Underway

The Nima Police are interrogating the driver to determine whether mechanical failure, human error, or other factors caused the crash. Authorities have yet to confirm if the former president was home at the time, though no further security breaches were reported.

This incident highlights the need for improved road infrastructure and safety protocols in densely populated urban areas to protect both pedestrians and property.
