Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has lauded former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his leadership and the reforms implemented during his tenure as Ghana’s President.

In a letter dated 8 January 2025, a day after Akufo-Addo left office, Ms. Georgieva expressed gratitude for his contributions to Ghana’s development and acknowledged the strong partnership between his administration and the IMF over the past eight years.

“As you transition from your role as President of Ghana following fair and peaceful elections, I want to express my gratitude for your leadership during your time in office. The policies and reforms during your administration have laid the groundwork for Ghana’s future,” Ms. Georgieva wrote.

Recognition of Crisis Management

The IMF chief highlighted Akufo-Addo’s efforts in advocating for Sub-Saharan Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, which helped mobilize crucial resources to address the crisis.

“Your advocacy for the Sub-Saharan Africa region during the COVID-19 pandemic helped mobilize the needed resources to respond to the crisis,” the letter stated, acknowledging his role in rallying international support during one of the region’s most challenging periods.

Partnership with the IMF

Ms. Georgieva also praised the Akufo-Addo administration for its successful collaboration with the IMF, citing the recent completion of the third review of an IMF-supported program and the progress made in restoring macroeconomic stability.

“The recent completion of the third review of the IMF-supported program and the progress made toward restoring macroeconomic stability over the past few years are a testament to a successful partnership,” she noted, adding that these achievements reflect a commitment to critical reforms that have set Ghana on a positive trajectory.

A Positive Legacy

The letter concluded with well wishes for the former President’s future endeavors.

“Thank you for your service and leadership. I wish you the best in your future endeavors,” Ms. Georgieva wrote, underscoring the IMF’s appreciation for his contributions.

The commendation comes as Ghana transitions to a new administration following peaceful elections, marking the end of Akufo-Addo’s presidency. The acknowledgment of his leadership and reform efforts by a key international partner highlights his legacy in fostering economic stability and international collaboration during his tenure.
