Black Stars coach Otto Addo has expressed strong disapproval of the growing trend of online abuse directed at players, emphasizing the detrimental impact it has on the team. Addo, while open to constructive criticism, firmly condemned the insults players face, stressing that they deserve respect both on and off the field.
In particular, Addo highlighted the case of left-back Baba Rahman, who has been excelling at PAOK in Greece but has turned down national team invitations due to past mistreatment from fans. Rahman faced boos and online abuse, leading him to focus solely on his club career.
“You can criticise me when I am wrong; when things aren’t going well for the players, you can criticise them too. But what’s wrong is for you or the fans to insult the players,” Addo remarked.
He further explained that such negative behavior affects not only the players but also their families and loved ones, noting, “They have families, kids, friends, and wives. When they see these insults, it affects them.”
Addo called on the public to support the team and reminded fans that players are invited by coaches, making it the responsibility of the coaching staff to protect them from unwarranted abuse.
