John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has echoed his party’s call for a forensic audit of the voters register, citing significant issues that need to be addressed before the December 7, 2024 elections.
Speaking on the matter, Mahama highlighted several problems with the current voters register, urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to take immediate action to prevent potential confusion on election day. He expressed concern that many registered voters are unable to find their names, while others have had their details transferred without their knowledge. Additionally, he pointed out that some individuals have registered for proxy voting without the required biometric verification, and that names of those who engaged in multiple registrations still appear on the register.
“The Electoral Commission opened the register for people to go and inspect their names. I am sorry to say that there is a lot wrong with that register. The EC has to sit up so that we don’t have any confusion on election day,” Mahama stated.
He further emphasized the critical role of the EC in ensuring peaceful elections in Ghana, calling on the commission to address the issues promptly. “The EC is an important institution in us having peaceful elections in this country. So if the EC Commissioners are listening to me, you better wake up. You are not doing your job properly,” Mahama added.
Mahama’s remarks come at a time of growing concern within the NDC about the integrity of the electoral process, with party leaders pushing for a comprehensive review of the voters register to ensure a fair and transparent election.
