Rushing To Elect A Flagbearer Without Addressing Problems Will Bring Another Defeat – Ken Agyapong

Speaking at the 2025 NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference, Agyapong argued that the party has yet to fully understand why it lost power, despite the formation of a fact-finding committee led by former Speaker Mike Oquaye. He warned that holding internal elections without addressing these fundamental problems could doom the NPP’s chances in the 2028 general elections.

Outspoken New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Kennedy Agyapong has slammed the party’s decision to proceed with selecting a new flagbearer before thoroughly analyzing and resolving the internal issues that contributed to its 2024 election defeat.

“We Still Don’t Know Why We Lost”

Agyapong expressed frustration with the Oquaye Committee’s findings, stating that the party leadership remains in the dark about the real reasons behind its electoral failure.

“We set up the Mike Oquaye committee to investigate our defeat, but as we sit here, the key decision-makers in the party still don’t know what went wrong. The committee briefed us and mentioned ‘expansion’ as a factor—but is that really why we lost so badly? We haven’t gotten proper answers,” he said.

He cautioned that unless the NPP identifies and fixes its internal weaknesses, even a candidate of the highest stature would struggle to win in 2028.

“If we don’t solve these problems, you can bring Jesus Christ as our presidential candidate—we will still lose. Because when we go out to campaign, what message will we give? We don’t even know why we lost in the first place.”

“Monsters in the Party” Caused Division

Agyapong also took aim at what he described as the rise of “monsters” within the NPP—powerful figures whose unchecked influence led to disunity and poor decision-making.

“There’s nothing wrong with our party’s structure from the grassroots to the top. The problem is that we allowed certain individuals to become too powerful, making arbitrary decisions that hurt us. We need to fix this before moving forward.”

Call for Unity and Internal Reforms

The Assin Central MP urged the party leadership to prioritize genuine reconciliation and structural reforms over individual ambitions.

“For the sake of the party, let’s do the right thing. If the leadership acts responsibly, I can even help raise funds to organize proper internal elections. At the very least, we must conduct polling station elections transparently before moving to the presidential primaries.”

The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, with several prominent figures, including Agyapong, expected to contest. However, his remarks highlight growing concerns that the party risks repeating past mistakes unless it first addresses its internal fractures and strategic failures.

As the NPP seeks to reclaim power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Agyapong’s blunt critique serves as a stark reminder that unity and self-reflection—not just a new flagbearer—will be key to its revival.
