The Rent Control Department has cautioned landlords against using s*x as exchange for rent cost.
This comes after an incident at Adeiso in the Eastern Region where a landlord asked a female tenant to vacate his room after she breached a sexual agreement between them.
Speaking on Rainbow radio’s ‘Nyankonton Mu Nsem’, the public relationship officer (PRO) for the department, Mr. Emmanuel Kposu said such act is contrary to Section 25(1)(b) of the rent law.
He stated that is is unlawful for any landlord to give out their rooms for rent in exchange for s*x or any material thing in place of rent apart from the approved rate.
He also noted that it is punishable by law and stressed the need for tenants and landlords to take note of it.
Mr Kposu called on landlords to desist from charging more than six months rent, saying ‘no landlord has the right to charge more than six months rent in advance.’
He educated landlords on the need to pay eight percent of their annual rent income tax to the Ghana Revenue Authority.
