As anticipated by many, internal power struggle in the ruling New Patriotic is beginning to take center stage as MP for Essikado Ketan, and a leading member of the party, Joe Ghartey announces his intention to lead the party after Akufo-Addo.

With President Akufo-Addo having been elected for a second term, he becomes ineligible to lead the party again, hence the competition to replace him gets even hotter.

Many would have thought that Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia would be given a free pass to lead the party after his boss, considering the extensive work he has done with his wife to turn the fortunes of the NPP around, especially in the Northern regions.

However, Minister of Trade and Industry, Allan Kyeremateng, who has thrice contested President Akufo-Addo is still around, together with a host of several ambitious party faithfuls.

As the dust is yet to settle on the Party’s victory in the 2020 elections, it is Mr Joe Ghartey who has given the clearest indication yet that he will contest to lead the party.

In conversation with Pure FM, the MP said, “Chief there’s only one truth, I contested for the last election and I came third, Akufo-Addo came first and Kyeremanteng came second and I was third. 2024 if God permits I will stand for the President of Ghana,” he said while reacting to a report that ranked his popularity in the New Patriotic Party”.
