The Chiefs of Offinso have publicly denounced the recent demonstration conducted by some youth of the town, expressing their discontent with the decision of the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in blocking the nomination of Dr. K.K Sarpong as Chief of Offinso.
In a rare display of unity and support for their traditional leadership, the Chiefs of Offinso have asserted their endorsement of the Asantehene’s authority to ensure the proper selection of a new chief of Offinso in line with Asante traditions and customs. The youth, in their demonstration, had contended that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II did not possess the power to block the nomination of a chief proposed by the Offinsohemaa, but the Chiefs have distanced themselves from this assertion.
The Chiefs of Offinso maintain that the Asantehene holds the sole prerogative to accept or reject the appointment of the Chief of Offinso, highlighting the significant role he plays in traditional governance and leadership within the Asante Kingdom.
The youth’s protest had raised questions about the balance of power and authority within the traditional hierarchy. Still, the Chiefs’ clear statement of support for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has reinforced the traditional structure’s integrity and underscored the unity and respect that exists within the traditional leadership of Asante.
This development reaffirms the cultural and historical significance of the Asantehene’s role in the selection of chiefs and traditional leaders in the Asante kingdom. The unity displayed by the Chiefs of Offinso serves as a powerful reminder of the deep-rooted respect for tradition and authority in the region.
